Saturn surprises with 128 new moons: astronomers confirm that its total number of satellites now exceeds 270.

Saturn has reclaimed its title as the "king of the moons." An international team of astronomers has identified 128 new moons orbiting the ringed planet, bringing its total to 274. This discovery not only far surpasses Jupiter, which has 95 confirmed moons, but also raises new questions about Saturn's violent past and its cosmic environment.
The discovery, led by Edward Ashton, is based on years of observations with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT).
Astronomers used a technique that combines successive images to detect extremely faint and small objects orbiting Saturn. Many of these moons could be fragments of astronomical collisions that occurred millions of years ago.
