UNAM contributes to unraveling the dynamics of black holes

Image
Yazid Lovillo Using observations from 2017 and 2018, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration, a project involving experts from UNAM's Institute of Astronomy (IA), has deepened our understanding of the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy Messier 87 (M87). Alejandro Cruz Osorio, a researcher at the university and collaborator of the EHT, explained that the work team confirmed that its rotation axis points in the opposite direction to Earth and demonstrated that turbulence within the accretion disk (gas that rotates around the black hole) plays an important role in explaining the observed change in the peak brightness of the ring, compared to what was seen in 2017. The findings, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, mark a step forward in unraveling the complex dynamics of black hole environments, since until 2019, these types of phenomena had been theorized, but there was no visual verification of their behavior. Meteor shower in Mexico, this will be the day of greatest activity for observing them in the sky.

Image
YAZID ALBERTO COLORADO LOVILLO These tiny particles travel at a speed of approximately 49 kilometers per second and generate flashes of light when they enter the Earth's atmosphere. The Lyrid meteor shower occurs during the month of April, so occasionally one of these meteors penetrates deeper into the Earth's atmosphere, transforming into fireballs and meteors, as happened early Wednesday morning in the Valley of Mexico. In 2025, astronomical calculations indicate that the period of this astronomical phenomenon runs from April 17 to 26; however, the peak of meteor activity is expected during the night of April 21 to 22, with an estimated 18 bodies per hour. Donald Trump Seeks to Renegotiate the Nuclear Deal with Iran

Image
Xavier Córdoba On April 7, 2025, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that his administration has begun "direct" negotiations with Iran regarding its nuclear program. This initiative marks a significant shift in U.S. foreign policy towards Tehran, aiming to establish a new framework that limits the country's nuclear activities. In statements made on April 17, Trump expressed his desire to reach an agreement that not only halts Iran's nuclear development but also considers the partial lifting of previously imposed sanctions. These sanctions were part of his "maximum pressure" campaign designed to force Iran to renegotiate the terms of the nuclear deal. The talks come in a delicate context, as tensions between the two countries have been high since the U.S. withdrawal from the nuclear agreement in 2018. However, Trump has indicated that he is willing to make concessions if Iran shows a willingness to compromise. U.S. negotiators have set a two-month de...

In a chat with Vulture, Encinas recounted details about those intense, exciting, and somewhat chaotic days inside Japan's most famous studio. Encinas, who already had experience on major productions like Disney's "Goofy the Movie," was one of the first Westerners to join Ghibli, and although he now teaches animation at the Gobelins school in Paris, he hasn't forgotten what he experienced there. "Exercises with bouncing balls, drawing hands all day..." he recalls. "In less than three months, I learned more than in all my years at Gobelins and Disney," he said without a second thought. During that time, he saw Hayao Miyazaki in action up close, dir...

This decision, published on April 10, 2025, marks a new chapter in the prolonged trade war between the two nations. The tariffs will apply to a wide range of Chinese products and aim to pressure Beijing to change its trade policies. This measure will not only affect Chinese exporters but could also have repercussions for American consumers, who may face higher prices on imported goods. China's response has been swift. In a retaliatory move, the Chinese government announced that it would raise its own tariffs on U.S. products from 84% to 125%, further intensifying trade tensions between the two powers. This increase could impact key sectors of the U.S. economy, including agriculture and manufacturing. Economic analysts warn that this escalation in tariffs could have negative effects on global economic growth and further complicate diplomatic relations bet...
