Paquita la del Barrio, the popular Mexican singer who became an icon of hatred towards men, dies.

 Leonor Guadalupe Torres Alarcón

"Me estas oyendo inútil!" was one of her most celebrated phrases.

Throughout her five-decade career, Paquita la del Barrio was recognized for her songs about heartbreak, which pointed out machismo and exalted female independence, themes that made her very popular in the Mexican regional genre.

"Rata de dos patas" was one of her greatest hits, with witty lyrics that were sung by her audience at each performance. "Cheque en blanco", "Me saludas a la tuya", "Tres tiempos te engañé" or "Pobre pistolita" were other of her great hits.

Her voice and style were well received by her small audience until she began recording her first album in 1984. She performed in nightclubs and bars in the Mexican capital until a television appearance at that time led her to national fame.

Her subsequent productions, many of them with songs composed by Manuel Eduardo Toscano with themes about men, led her to international fame. In her long career she sold more than 20 million records.

She participated in two films and a dozen soap operas and television series.

In her later years, Paquita la del Barrio began to suffer from health problems that prevented her from moving her legs. She was limited to performing while sitting.

Her death generated numerous messages of condolences and celebration of her musical career.

Paquita la del Barrio was one of the few divas left on stage. Her image, full of gauze, sequins and makeup, made her unique and despite the great fame she amassed, she always remained close to the humble people, one of the reasons for her success. In all her interviews she repeated it. “My place is among the people and the humble people of Mexico.” A woman who never forgot her origins and how hard she had to work to support her family.

- “Cuando muera quiero ser recordada con mucho amor, como una mujer luchona y trabajadora”
